Oil pictograph on old panel with gold background and hot chalk reliefs. Original work: 15th century, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Philbrook Museum of Art
Description
Among art history scholars, it is hypothesized that the panel in question was originally located in Venice and then in Belluno. Reliable sources indicate that it was sold to Samuel Kress, through whom Philbrook Art Center (Kress) passed. As far as chronology is concerned, help comes from the calligraphy on the mantle and on the background that indicate a probable location in the late first decade of the fifteenth century, belonging to the first period of his stay in Venice, that is, when the artist was influenced by the marvellous immobility of lagoon painting. The state of conservation of the pictorial application is very compromised, very abraded and improperly repainted in large areas. The figure of the Child is undoubtedly completely redone, of which nothing remains of the original kindness that can be seen in the other "Madonnas and Child" made by the artist and which presents the appearance of a child with an absence of movement.
