Fresco pictography on lime (fresco). Original work: Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Vatican City, Pinacoteca Vaticana
Description
Believed in the past to be a work by Maratta, the Rest during the Flight into Egypt was then correctly attributed to Francesco Mancini, an artist born in the Marche region but Emilian by training, active in papal territory in the first half of the eighteenth century. Among his contemporaries, Mancini had a singular position, developing a completely personal language that is a synthesis of Baroque and Rococo elements, a painting characterized by ease and fluency of execution as well as by a fluid and vital chromatic matter. The Rest was purchased in 1772 by Clement XIV (pontiff from 1769 to 1774) with two other paintings of mythological subjects by the same author.
Information
The work is executed through the technique of Pictography, according to ancient methods and natural materials; it is handmade entirely in Umbria.
