Oil pictography on panel. Original work: fresco, 1499-1502, Orvieto, Duomo, Chapel of San Brizio
Description
The chapel is organized in two large bays, covered by cross vaults, generating six lunettes, one of which is partly occupied by the entrance portal and another, opposite, is divided into two semi-lunettes by the Gothic window that surmounts the altar. The vaults are organized in sails on a gold background, divided by ribs with plant motifs and Gothic-style frames, with bands on a red background decorated with motifs taken from the miniature, interspersed with hexagons with heads.
Information
The work is carried out through the technique of Pictography, according to ancient methods and natural materials; it is handmade entirely in Umbria.
Each frame is made of solid wood, with an interlocking joint; the first primer is based on Bologna gypsum and natural glue; the later are in tempera. The decoration is handmade and, usually, it is studied on the work it will contain. The design is inspired by the museum frames of the various eras.
