Fresco pictography on lime (fresco). Original work: oil on silk, 1635-1636, Rome, Church of Santa Maria Immacolata
Description
The painting St. Michael the Archangel is located in the first chapel on the right side of the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini or Santa Maria Immacolata in Via Veneto and depicts the Archangel Michael defeating Lucifer. The work St. Michael the Archangel is structured diagonally, and starts from the right arm up while holding the sword and culminates in the left foot crushing the head of Lucifer, submissive to the ground. The chromatic intensity is expressed in shades of blue and silver, while the balance and harmony of classicism is revealed in the beauty of the Archangel Michael, the candid and youthful face, the golden hair vibrating in the wind, the grace of the figure and the soft robes. Finally, the wings of the Archangel Michael delimit the width of the canvas.
