Fresco pictography on lime and solid wood board. Original work: c. 1100, Assisi, Basilica of Santa Chiara
Description
Jesus is represented at the same time wounded and strong. He is not dead, he stands straight and resolute. We are faced with the iconography of the Christus triumphans (who triumphs over death), and his halo already includes the image of the glorified cross. The bright color of his body contrasts with the dark red and black around and accentuates the importance of Jesus. While Christ is represented in his full stature, all the other figures are depicted shrunk. Above the head is the Latin inscription (titulus crucis) with abbreviations (Jesus of Nazareth king of the Jews).
